いつ終わるか分からない「いま」を生きる僕たちが、豊かな未来を紡いでいくためにできることはなんだろう。

We are unsure if the future will exist forever.
We live in a “present” which we do not know, and cannot predict how long it will last. What can we do to secure a rich future?

地球上の生命のネットワークは、絶えず形を変えながら影響を及ぼし合っている。何かひとつの正しさで地球上のすべての生命が幸福になるわけではないのだとしたら、互いの存在を感じながら微調整を続けるほかない。ならば、一部の人が描く未来をもとに社会全体が組み替えられていくことに抗う必要があるかもしれない。多様な存在がそれぞれに求める未来を感じ合い、調和を生み出すことはいかにして可能なのだろうか。

Terrestrial ecosystems exert mutual influences which generate change. There is no single correct state governing the wellbeing of all earthly life, so that there is no alternative to constant, subtle adjustment, deriving from experiences of mutual pressure. Since this is so, should we not resist the urge to reconfigure society based solely on the opinions of a limited groups of people? How can harmony be achieved while people sense the diversity of other people’s images of the future?

「未来は変えられない。僕らが本当に変えられるのは過去だ」これは僕が極地で暮らす人たちから学んだ未来への姿勢だ。未来とは、過去という土に根を張り、生きていく姿勢から生まれるもの。文字ではない過去との接点に生まれる調和が、歴史という地味を育む。
乱暴なことを言えば、科学とは時間を奪う学問だ。この一瞬の現象を、過去や未来を問わず、全ての時間に適用しようとする、再現性に依拠した、文字による秩序だ。対して歴史とは、いのちの目盛で刻まれる、人の営みの軌跡だ。歴史の繰り返しは、普遍性という時をかける観念をうむ。科学というせっかちな学問から恩恵を受けすぎている今日の僕らに、過去の上に根を下ろす力はまだ在るだろうか。

“It is impossible to change the future. It is only the past that we can change.” I learned this attitude toward the future from people in the marginal regions of civilization. Our future derives from seeing life like roots spreading through the soil of the past. Harmony is created at nodes in a non-verbal past, which we use to nurture history’s base-ground.
Frankly put, science is a discipline operating outside time. Science seeks to attribute momentary phenomena to temporal, or even timeless elements, whether in past or future. History, on the other hand, traces human activity inscribed on a human scale. Science is a system that relies on reproducibility, while History traces activities engraved by actual life. History repeats itself and so generates notions of universality. Today’s science benefits us almost too much, becoming an impatient scholarly field. Do we still have the capacity to spread roots in the soil of the past?
